I see from your website that you lead a small, New Testament church. I see that you are fed up with radical Islam. You are not alone. Maybe of us would like to go one day without radical Islam making news.
However, if I might be so bold, may I direct your attention to Matthew 5? Yes, the whole chapter. It starts off with the Beatitudes: Blessed are the meek, the poor in spirit, the merciful and pure in heart. Oh, and look here at what I found! “11“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” In my humble opinion, bible and flag burnings are insulting and persecution. Moving on, we have a section about how calling someone a fool puts you in danger of the fires of hell, and that if your brother has something against you, you should leave your gift at the alter and make it right with your brother. It wraps up with the ever-familiar “love your enemies” and “pray for those who persecute you.”
Pastor, I understand that you’re angry. Righteous anger is not a bad thing. However, expressing it by burning the Koran will do more damage than good. Jesus told us to turn the other cheek and forgive. He told us to treat others as we would like to be treated. Is that how you want to be treated? They are burning you in effigy in Afghanistan, Pastor. They are burning flags and bibles because of what your church is getting ready to do.
To my Christian friends reading this: Please pray for Pastor Terry Jones and Dove World Outreach Center in Gainseville, FL. Pray that his eyes might open and his anger may abate. If he does not turn away from what he plans to do, we will be praying for far more lives than his, and we will lose souls for the Kingdom that might otherwise have been won.
To my non-Christian friends reading this: Please understand that the actions of Pastor Jones are not those of every Christian. I believe there are many more of us who stand ready to condemn his Koran burning, who would rather fight Islam God’s way. Just as we are not all hypocrites or Bible thumpers, so we are not all Muslim haters. Some of us still believe in praying for our enemies and letting God have judgment.
Pastor Jones, rejoice and be glad! Have a prayer meeting instead and pray for your enemies instead of antagonizing them.
